Designing an 30 x 15 cm album is not something I do everyday. o when the opportunity arose to design a 30 x 15 the creative juices began flowing and this is what I came up.

Creating and Designing Album spreads is creative and pretty cool!!
Especially when you get to use and insert double page spreads into that Wedding Album. What is the purpose and reasoning behind a double page spread? You may be asking yourself. The first thing that comes to mind is that “WOW” factor. I am a firm believer in adding at least two to three double spreads in a wedding album. Not only does it create visual impact it also allows some breathing space if I can call it that, an eye rest. Bearing in mind that not all images captured on the day might be suitable for a double spread. This is where the photographer can visualize a scene on the day and realize, “Yea! let me shoot this in landscape format, allowing breathing space on the sides, as well as cropping space just in case.” and create a double page spread.
Another purpose of a double page spread is in presenting your couple and those who will be viewing the album with an opening and closing shot that will stand out. It is important to have a “Wow” opening page with the couples name and date of the wedding as this forms part of the story telling. So now we have the opening page, what about the closing page. This can pose a bit of a dilemma but only if you allow it to. There are many opportunities at the reception to create a closing page that has that impact and completes the story. These double page spreads all formed part of the wedding album. This particular album had four double page spreads.

Above: With this spread I now had to complete the story by adding some secondary images. Secondary images or sub-dominant images fall into this category. These are accent images that add to the main image to complete the story telling.
the image below is an example where I used secondary images,. This double page spread was followed by this spread. Notice the effective use of negative space and the black background. No white keystrokes were used around the images. The spreads were kept simple and uncluttered, rather relying on the images to tell the story than use effects such as drop shadows.
You will also notice that with the image on the far right hand side, I have specifically used an image where the couple are looking out the album spread. This was done to create disharmony in the album design. It is more common practice to have the couple looking in towards the album, but in this case I went against the norm, and it works. Creating and designing a great Wedding Album takes time but the rewards even greater, especially when you see your clients reliving their wedding through your eyes and artistry.
